, since the sandy hook elementary school shootings on december 14th, there have been almost 250 gun deaths in north america or just about 13 gun deaths for each day, and even this morning we learned there was a shooting at a police station in camden, new jersey. so, you know, you mentioned gun control as an issue that the president needed to really get working on pretty quickly in january. how is that going to compete with other agenda items and how will the president and i would also say the outside groups really keep the pressure on to make sure that something meaningful happens? >> you know, that's a very good question, karen, and in a sense i wonder if it's already too late. if you don't act on these things quickly, people stop talking about it. the gun rights activists and the nra don't stop talking about it. they regain the traction they had momentarily lost. there is still hope for that issue, but the president really needs to move on that in january wile also remembering that the first three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. >> how -- i think part of the sad

hurricane sandy hit. transportation was blocked. power was out for a big swath of the country. factories had to stop producing. the economy particularly in the northeast was a mess. there was no way to survey it well. that, the economists say is why their expectations are so low for tomorrow. the good news is the hurricane's affects are reversing and quickly. the number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits rocketed in the week of the hurricane. last week fell just as rapidly. we will eventually know what happened to the labor market in november. but as my "washington post" colleague neil irwin writes, probably not until december 21st or so when the state by state jobs numbers come out, that we can filter out the states hit by the hurricane and see what's going on in states where the economy was relatively normal. done. whatever the number is -- time to spare. whatever the number is tomorrow, don't freak out, don't worry about it. at least not yet. and that much freshness is gonna take some getting used to... "consumer reports" says spending fell in october after rising in september. the gdp was higher than estimated. i never can quite figure out how they can both be true and whether or not this continues in coming months. >> that's a great question. i think we need to start with the revised number for the third quarter. the reason we saw gdp growth in the third quarter was because businesses were restocking their inventory. an government spending increased about 9.5%. not sustainable indicators of economic growth in the long term. consumer spending makes up about 70% of economic growth. the fact we saw that come down in october and actually the fact in november the early numbers despite a robust holiday shopping weekend are still not looking so good is why we're seeing economists predict a weak fourth quarter economic number. and we're actually seeing numbers as low as 1% which would be really terrible. >> no

. could have something to do with superstorm sandy. weak in yesterday's third quarter gdp report. profits, and these are the broadest gdp profits, covering about 5 million large and small companies really came in pretty good in the third quarter. up 9% from a year ago. so even though business looks weak, good profits could be the backbone of the stock market despite the hysteria of the fiscal cliff. let's talk to don -- for all th hysteria, profits are rising, the economy has got pluses and minuses. i'm not sure people need to pay all that attention to the fiscal cliff. >> well, if you look at what the global stock markets are doing, they suggest that our market would be doing significantly better were it not for the fiscal cliff. now profits have been good. i think people are getting used to the idea they trust corporate ceos more than they trust those that print government bonds that aren't really worth as much by the time they mature. they're also seeing a yield compression around the world. if you look at corporate beyond yields, they're about half of where they were just a year ago.
